Spread kindness and joy in everything you do.
Today marks the 27th Random Acts of Kindness Day. February 17th is used to spread kindness and joy around the world. This holiday encourages people to pay it forward in any way they can. Large or small acts of kindness can make a big impact on those around you. Bringing an extra coffee for your coworker or volunteering as a company at your local blood bank can bring joy. Also, incorporate kindness into your personal life, hold the door open for a stranger or create a treat basket for your delivery driver.
The Random Acts of Kindness Organization provides resources, suggestions and other recommendations about spreading kindness in your community. They suggest activities for each day of Random Acts of Kindness Week and have pages of content related to ‘getting inspired.’ RAK also has information for educators and shares details about kindness on their blog. Check out their website for inspiration on the subject.
Bring kindness into the office
40 hour work weeks mean that individuals spend most of their daytimes in the office. Interacting with managers, coworkers, and other members of the workplace is a part of daily office life. As a result, individuals get to know their coworkers personally, learning about their family, their hobbies, and significant events in their lives.
These personal conversations result in connections between coworkers and can even lead to friendships beyond the workplace. When connections happen, it’s nice to keep up with them through random acts of kindness. Expressing your appreciation for an action they have completed can go a long way. In some cultures, food is the cornerstone of building connections. Consider sharing a snack or bringing in extra food once in a while.
Bring kindness into manager-employee relationships
Expressing your appreciation and gratitude as a manager is essential to maintaining healthy manager/employee relationships. Without it, employees may never know how you feel about their work.
Consider setting up a monthly chat to discuss the successes of your employees. Also go over areas of improvement, but focus on expressing thanks for the employee’s work for you. Reference a specific project or detail where you thought they exceeded your expectations and what you hope to see from them in the future. Doing so will keep employees motivated and passionate about the work that they are doing.
If you manage a team, consider hosting team-building conversations focusing on kindness. Have everyone express something they appreciated, liked or benefited from a colleague in an open environment. These conversations will create a welcoming atmosphere and encourage more productivity and higher quality work.
Bring kindness into customer communication
As a business, it is essential to express joy to your customers. Whether through regular communications or fun promotions, regularly express your gratitude for your customers’ commitment. By doing so, you will instill a sense of trust, pride and joy into your customers about your brand. It will also increase customer loyalty and brand awareness and, overall, increase revenue.
To incorporate acts of kindness into regular customer communications, consider expressing the role of the customer in your business. When launching a new feature, begin an email campaign by stating ‘We heard your requests and we listened’ or ‘Thanks to your feedback, we have launched this new feature’. Doing so will tell the customer that their input directly impacts your business. This will give customers a stronger connection to your business.
Consider running a contest or offering an exclusive sale as additional promotional campaigns. Customers love the chance of winning something, so running a giveaway on social media is often a way to express thanks. Did you recently hit 50 thousand followers on Instagram? Run a 50K giveaway as a way of saying thank you. You can also send exclusive offers and rebates to your customer’s inboxes. This will get them on your site purchasing products because they will save money.
Random acts of kindness should be a part of everyday life. Managers, coworkers and teams should make showing appreciation and gratitude a part of every day. This will create a better work environment where everyone comes into the office motivated and excited to get the job done. You will see an increase in productivity and quality of work as a result.
